UGANDA: Children & War

"I was chopping wood in the bush.  A rebel soldier recognized me from my village, and he turned his back.  I ran very
fast.  That man saved my life" - Laker Doreen, who was abducted at the age of 11, talking about the day she escaped.
At Pader Displaced People's Camp in northern Uganda, Errol interviewed teenagers who had been abducted and forced
to be child soldiers or "wives" to the rebels, or were forced out of their home villages when the rebels attacked.  Almost
all of the teenagers living in Pader and other Camps are orphans and living in abject poverty.

During the interview process, the kids made drawings to illustrate their plight. The drawings are placed here below their
photographs.  Errol selected 14 subjects for an exhibit of the portraits (each 30"x36") and drawings, along with a DVD
with the kids actual voice interviews as part of the show.  The exhibit, curated by Cynnie Gaasch, opened in 2008 at
The Olean Public Library Gallery in Olean NY, after which it was on view at El Museo Gallery in Buffalo.  In 2009, it was
hosted by The Art Institute of Washington, D.C.

This exhibit was made possible through a generous grant from M&T Bank and The New York State Council on the Arts.

CUBA: Nani

While I was doing the groundwork for a commissioned documentary project in Cuba, I met Adelaida Fernandez de Juan, a physician and award winning Cuban writer called “Laidi” by her friends

Laidi and I talked about my physical disability, and how my photography projects often involve people who are also physically challenged.  She told me about one of her patients, a 9-yr-old girl named Nani, who was born with Spina Bifuda, and was unable to walk.  Through Laidi, I was able to meet Nani and her family.

When you’re in her presence, you forget that Nani is disabled.  She can’t walk, yet she seems to fly everywhere, illuminating her surroundings with her beauty, her charm, and her captivating smile.  She is a wonderful role model for children who are disabled.

CUBA: A Jewish Journey

Comprised of a book and exhibit titled “Cuba: A Jewish Journey”, this work is a photo-documentation of Jews
and Jewish life in contemporary Cuba.  The project was completed during 2001-2003, and took me from
Havana to Camaguey to Santiago de Cuba, as well as many points in between.  I spent the equivalent of
over 7 months in Cuba to finish this worthwhile endeavor.

Permission from the Cuban government was obtained through an organization headed by friends in Cuba.

PROYART develops artistic and cultural programs for Americans and Cubans, and operates under UNEAC,
the Cuban Association for Artists and Writers.

PROYART arranged for me to obtain a Cuban journalist visa and press pass so that Cuban citizens would
know I was allowed to complete this work.

The B’nai B’rith Cuban Jewish Relief Project secured a US Treasury Department license for me to work in
                                                            Cuba, and sponsored my visits.
